The technique of glazing transparent colors will give you many useful options as an oil or acrylic painter. You can begin with a grayscale underpainting and gradually add layers of color. You can add richness, saturation or depth to an area without losing the details underneath. You can also unify large areas or create color harmony in a painting.
Glazing in oil is a technique that originated during the Renaissance period. It was made famous by artists like Rembrandt and Leonardo da Vinci. The technique of glazing can be used to create depth, subtle shifts in color and luminosity while using very little pigment. Create artwork that requires multiple layers of glazing, or glaze sparingly to add richness, unity or to color-correct your paintings. Format: Lecture & demonstration, studio practice with individual feedback or one-on-one instruction.
Level: Beginner to intermediate. All levels are welcome!
Medium: Oils or acrylic paints.
Technique: Glazing transparent layers of color over a grisaille (grayscale) underpainting.
Materials: The instructor will email the materials list before the first day of class. Note that painters must use drop cloths over tabletops. Oil painters are specifically required to use Gamsol or odorless mineral spirits & dispose of their oily rags in a flammable waste can.
