Nocturnes
(Nov. 2026)

Nov. 2, 9, 16 & 23, Monday Nights at the Campbell Studio.

Nocturnes are inspired by the nighttime and are often dreamy, pensive and emotionally expressive. Nocturne derives from the French word meaning "of the night". While originally used in the 18th century to describe music, the word nocturne is also used to describe a poem or painting.

Creating night images can be tricky.  Setting up to paint at night is a challenge, and taking a reference photo never looks quite like what you are experiencing in person.  Learn some helpful tips and effective color palettes to enhance the mood of your nocturne.  Lean into the poetry of the scene by implying information, grouping shapes and softening edges.
